Local sport — the park

Inside the Local sport shop at ParkSyde, drawn in the park’s own low, warm dawn light. A still pool of light lies at the centre of the room, holding the dawn. Nine trees stand spread around it, each mirrored faintly on the floor beneath it, and two lamps on posts flank a footpath of light leading in. Near the pool: a backless bench, a cradle with two balls in it, a kit bag put down on the floor, a ring on a backboard on its post, a ball left where somebody dropped it — nobody is behind anything, and nothing stands between them and you. Spread out across the room, each on its own post, are six brass push buttons. Their labels, floating over them, read: What we do; The clubhouse; What to tell us; Play a game; Ask for a time; Reach a person. Pressing one walks you over and the shop tells you that one thing.

The clubhouse

The half court out the front, with a game on itTwo playing each other and swapping the ball every possession, one working the glass for both of them, and one waiting a turn on the arc in a chair. The shots go in a bit better than half the time and the ones that do not come off the front of the ring, so the rebound is real. There is a peg board on the baseline with two ladders of eleven notches and a marker climbing each — first to eleven, which is the game played on every outdoor court in the country. It is out the front of the clubhouse in the park — the subject of this room is outside it, and that is the point of backing local sport at all.
The bench turned to watch the court, and a ball dropped where somebody left itA clubroom more than a shop. Both are in the clubhouse in the park and neither shows from the walk — the bench’s five degrees toward the court, and the ball behind the cradle it came out of.
The counter, with a public side to stand at1.68 by 1.38 metres of floor to stand still on — the only such floor in the room, and the place the court is in the window.
